Early this fall, I got to assist fellow photographer Kenzi Flinchum for a black tie DC wedding at the gorgeous Larz Anderson House. It was such a beautiful day! There’s something so romantic about a historic mansion on a rainy day — the soft, diffused light and Gilded-Age elegance made every moment feel even more intimate.
The day kicked off at the Park Hyatt, and the suite was full of fun energy. The ladies had ’90s pop blasting, champagne in hand, and were laughing the whole time. Before the getting-ready moments, I photographed all the little details — invitations, stationery, rings, all laid out in a flat lay. The design had this really elegant, European-inspired vibe, with delicate textures, classic typography, and tiny touches that hinted at travel and romance, like vintage stamps from Italy and an embossed wax seal.
Shooting these details in the soft morning light set the tone for a black tie DC wedding that felt timeless, thoughtful, and totally elegant.

Over on another floor, the groom was having a calmer morning, but there was still this quiet buzz of excitement. One of my favorite moments was when his dad pinned the boutonnière on his lapel — such a small thing, but so full of emotion. Just the two of them for a second, sharing a little moment of pride and love amid all the hustle of getting ready.
Once he was dressed, he joined his groomsmen in the hallway. These guys were full of energy, joking around and hyping each other up as they headed to the elevator. They piled in, still laughing, ready to grab their Uber to the Larz Anderson House. The mix of their excitement and the groom’s calm anticipation made for such a fun, real vibe.

First Look at the Larz Anderson House
They did their first look at the front entrance of the mansion, which honestly might be my favorite spot on the whole property. It was drizzling a bit, but it just made everything feel extra romantic. The stone and grand doorway made such a beautiful backdrop.
When she walked down the steps toward him, he literally just melted — nervous one second, totally in awe the next. They hugged and laughed, and it was one of those quiet, perfect moments that felt so personal and real, even with all the gorgeous grandeur around them.

Couples Portraits Around the Mansion
After the first look, we wandered around the grounds for portraits. The rain actually made everything feel extra romantic. We stopped under archways, on the grand staircase, and inside in the library and hallways for more intimate shots. They laughed, whispered, and just enjoyed the moment together, which made for portraits that feel timeless, elegant, and totally them.

The wedding party met up in front of the mansion, and what a fun group! Even with the drizzle, everyone was laughing, cheering, and having the best time. We got some classic, elegant shots, but also plenty of candid, playful ones that really showed their personalities. The energy these friends brought made the photos feel lively and joyful while still keeping that black tie DC wedding elegance.

With the rain coming down, the couple held both their ceremony and reception indoors. The mansion felt so cozy and intimate, especially with the chandeliers, antiques and historic artwork. Guests were close, sharing in every heartfelt vow, and the soft rain outside made the whole space feel quiet and romantic.
The reception in the ballroom was just dreamy — elegant tablescapes, warm lighting, and everyone celebrating together. Between heartfelt toasts, laughter, and dancing, the mansion’s historic architecture made everything feel classic and timeless, perfectly complementing the couple’s black tie celebration.
